Comprehensive Examination
and Xrays

Teeth, gum and the surrounding structures are also organs of our body that are vital to ensure long quality life but they are often overlooked. Problem in the mouth, just like most of the other problem with our body, does not show any obvious symptoms until later. We recommend all our patients a yearly dental check and x-rays however it is very often that you do not need to repeat x-ray every year if you have been keeping up with a good oral hygiene.

02_Oral Hygiene, clean and polish

Oral Hygiene,
Clean and polish

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene, with good home care and professional clean. Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause for many preventable dental problems such as gum disease and decay. If left untreated, these conditions can often result in loss of your natural teeth. A recent study has also revealed a correlation between poor oral hygiene and heart disease. Our dental professionals will advised you on the correct oral hygiene regime and will see you on regular basis for professional clean and maintenance. Early detection and prevention is the best you could do for your oral health.

A “hole” can be found on the tooth if the tooth is decayed or broken. We will discuss all your options and once a material of your choice is made then a dentist will place a filling in the tooth.

04_Pain relief and Root Canal Treatment

Pain relief
and Root Canal Treatment

In some cases where decay is left untreated for a period of time, the decay can get into the nerve of the tooth and cause the nerve to be infected, which will result in a tooth ache. At this point a root canal treatment will be required to relieve the pain. Doing a root canal treatment means you will be able to keep the tooth for function or aesthetic. It is strongly advised to have a crown put on after the tooth is root canal treated to preserve the tooth structure and ensure its ability to function.

05_Dental Crown and bridges

Crown and Bridges

Crowns are also known as “Cap”, it is a tooth shaped cap that fits over your teeth. This option is for people who have structurally weakened teeth, which might be contributed by teeth being Root Canal treated, heavily filled teeth due to decay, or teeth that has hidden cracks which causes discomfort when bite on. Crowns can also be used to cosmetically improve the appearance of your teeth.

A Bridge is an artificial tooth supported by the teeth on either side of the space. Unlike dentures, this is a fixed option for filling in spaces where tooth or teeth use to be.

It is always our best interest to keep your natural teeth whenever we can, however there are some teeth that are best to be removed if they are too badly damaged beyond repairing. If extraction is needed to be carried out then we will ensure that you are comfortable at all times. We will also inform you with all your options in replacing the gap after the extraction site heals.

Denture is also known as a “plate”. It is used to fill a space where a tooth or multiple teeth use to be. This is removable for the ease of cleaning them. A denture’s base can be made of plastic or metal, depending on each person’s oral health condition and need.

08_Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a popular and affordable choice to brighten your smile. Our dentist can advise you if your teeth and gum are healthy enough to go through a whitening process. We offer a range of whitening options from custom-made takehome kits to quick and easy in clinic whitening. Results can vary but generally the improvement is great enough for you to see the change within a short period of time.

09_Dental implants

Implant is one of the best ways to replace missing teeth. An implant is like an artificial tooth root, and is placed in to the jaw bone where the tooth has been lost. One or more implants can be used, depending on the size of the space. After a time of healing (usually a few months) an artificial tooth is attached to the implant. Treatment can take between six and twelve months, but during the treatment there will be temporary measures in place to cover the gap and protect the healing of the area.

A successful implant treatment ensures an artificial tooth that could be as strong as your own natural teeth. It is also the least invasive as implants does not rely on other teeth for its strength.

Our Team

Dr. Grace Chong, Principal Dentist

Grace came to NZ in her teenage years and had her goal set to become a confident and useful member of the society. It was never her intention from the beginning to become a dentist. In fact, Grace pictured herself being a journalist travelling around NZ and the world. However like anything in life, she stumbled upon the profession in dentistry and did thrive on it while at University of Otago. She graduated from The University of Otago – School of Dentistry in 2003, among the top 20 of her year. Grace found her first job in Wellington and spent 2 wonderful years building her relationships with her doting patients. When an opportunity came to purchase a small young practice in Flat Bush, she and her then fiancé Henry decided to make the big move. 6 years into running the small dental practice, the need for a larger place became obvious. In 2013, after much planning and thought put in, they moved to this well designed and purposely fitted out practice. This is the Botany South Dental you see in its current form.

Grace’s patients often complement her on her unique “chair side manner”. Patients describe her as gentle and informative. Grace believes the best decision can only be made when all the relevant information is given, and she understands how important this is when it comes to medical and dentally related matters. She will spend time explaining treatment plan to you and encourage you to ask questions. It is important for everyone to understand that there is not just only one way to fix the dental problem and understanding this is sometimes a complex process. Grace will guide you with her expertise to suit your individual life style, budget and expectations.

Outside of work Grace is your typical woman next door. She loves fashion, food, wine, travelling and having fun with her young daughter. Her weekends are filled with outdoor activities like going to the beach, zoo or a park to entertain her little girl. At home Grace and her family has two cats named Omi and Lily however she would refuse to be pigeon holed as a cat-person as she loves all animals.

Henry Chiang,
Practice Manager

It is our professional staffs that set us apart, but in the background of a dental practice is also a
highly technical environment, both hardware and software, that makes the whole place tick.

Henry, Grace’s right-hand man also partner in life, who is science trained combined with business acumen, has the perfect mix for running a practice like Botany South Dental. He makes sure everything runs smoothly from the music you hear when you walk through the door, infection control to the complicated dental equipment that is core to the function of our practice.

It is also his voice, with an American twang, which you will hear on the other end of the phone when you call us for an appointment. If you have any questions relating to your visit, he will be more than happy to help you.
